Eminent political satirist and Editor-in-Chief of Tamil weekly news magazine ‘Thuglak’, Cho Ramaswamy, passed away early this morning due to prolonged illness. He was 82. A close friend to Jayalalithaa and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Srinivasa Iyer Ramaswamy was undergoing treatment at the Apollo hospital in Chennai, a report said. His body was taken to his residence at MRC Nagar where his friends and family and public will be paying homage to him. Ramaswamy was a legend in the south and a most trusted friend of Jayalalithaa. She is known to have sought his advice on key political issues. Ramaswamy is survived by wife, son and daughter. He had acted in many movies and featured with top actors like Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan. Union Minister Nirmala Sitharaman paid her homage to Ramaswamy. “Editor of ‘Thuqlak’, its annual lecture- a calendar event, felt his RS tenure wasn’t so productive. Will be missed. Cho-Writer, dramatist, journalist, political analyst/critic, humorist, theatre & film artist – versatile,uncompromising…,” Sitharaman tweeted.
Last year PM Narendra Modi called on Ramaswamy, at his residence in Chennai. PM Modi had also participated in the 42nd anniversary of the magazine as Gujarat Chief Minister in Chennai on January 14, 2012. The meeting between Modi and Ramaswamy had lasted about 10 minutes and during this brief interaction PM Modi enquired about Ramaswamy’s health. Later talking to reporters, Ramaswamy had said the meeting was only a meeting between friends and they did not discuss anything political. “He is my long time friend and came to enquire about my health”, Ramaswamy added.
