Avengers: Age of Ultron Is Everything You Wanted It to Be

age_of_ultron_poster.jpg

Ever since Iron Man kicked off the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2008, the film franchise has been steadily gaining in popularity. When The Avengers finally brought Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, the Hulk, Black Widow, and Hawkeye all together in a single movie it was almost too much to handle. As expected, the movie made a lot of money, but, perhaps more importantly, The Avengers was a lot of fun. Has director Joss Whedon been able to deliver something that's bigger, better and fresh? Almost definitely.
The best thing about Avengers: Age of Ultron can be summed up in a single word - exuberance. The film combines dramatic action set pieces with moments of intimacy, tension with humour, and just like the first Avengers film, this one is also bright and colourful.
While Christian Nolan and Zack Snyder's DC movies strive to be grounded and realistic with lots of brown and grey, the Avengers presents itself in bright pop tones that feel like a comic book. Of course, you could argue that comics themselves stopped being fun and cover themselves in grim themes long ago, but thankfully that's a trend that's dying out as well.
age_of_ultron_hulkbuster.jpgThe story of Age of Ultron is actually fairly serviceable, if predictable. The characters themselves are another story - between Mark Ruffalo's Hulk and Robert Downey Jr's Iron Man, it's difficult say which character is more perfect. Thor, Captain America, Black Widow, and Hawkeye round out the Avengers, and it is hard to imagine anything that could pose a real threat to the team.
Until you meet the Maximoff twins - Pietro aka Quicksilver and Wanda, the Scarlet Witch. We've seen Quicksilver on screen before, in X-Men: Days of Future Past. The two films don't have any connection though, and the actors and characters are completely different.
That's a pity, because Quicksilver's character was one of the best things in Days of Future Past, and when we caught bits of the movie on television recently, we found ourselves watching only to catch his part of the prison break scene, before changing the channel again. Quicksilver in Age of Ultron isn't bad either, but he's definitely not as much fun as the in Days of Future Past.
age_of_ultron_wonder_twins.jpgBut it is Scarlet Witch whose ability to get telepathically mess with your mind that really sets the Age of Ultron in motion. Stark realises that the Avengers aren't enough to protect the world, and decides with Bruce Banner's help to create something that is. The result of his secret experiments is Ultron, who is in many ways the idealised version of Iron Man, without any of the weaknesses or inconsistencies that come from the "man" part of that character.
James Spader as the voice of Ultron sounds fantastic, and Ultron is a great blend of menace and camp as well. Say what you will about superhero movies in general, the fact is that Marvel's slate of films has done really well so far because they're driven more by the characters in them than the spectacle. That's true with Avengers: Age of Ultron as well. You won't walk out feeling like you've seen a great piece of cinema, but you'll wish you could spend more time with these superheroes.
One of our favourite scenes in the film has actually already been partly shown in the trailers of the movie. We're talking about the party scene where our heroes have gathered around, and are just sharing a drink and telling each other jokes. It's fantastic, and everyone feels so natural. Despite the widespread violence and destruction, the film remains peppy and fun thanks to the characters, so you're always comfortable watching.
age_of_ultron_couch.jpgBruce Banner and Tony Stark in particular have amazing chemistry, and all their dialogue together is fantastic. Speaking of chemistry, the Hulk and Black Widow also have that in spades in this film - it's a bit of a plot point and with the film only just released we'll keep away from spoilers, but it's a very likeable pairing. Jeremy Renner's Hawkeye also has much more to do in this film compared to the first Avengers movie, but Scarlett Johansson's role seems to have gotten more limited, taking a step backwards from what we saw in Captain America: Winter Soldier.
Ant-Man releases in June and from the trailers at least, it seems to have the tone of a heist movie. Hopefully Ant-Man will finally get to meet the Avengers in the next film in the series - Infinity War - not least of all because we'd love to see Paul Rudd and Mark Ruffalo sharing the screen. Meanwhile, next year Captain America and Iron Man will both be in the next Captain America film, based on Civil War. With contracts running out, we will likely see some actors changing in the next few movies, and Civil War in particular could be a great place to do this.
What's really exciting for us, as comic book fans, is that by now Marvel has been able to move beyond standalone films and establish a real cinematic universe, complete with big crossover events. Both the Avengers and Age of Ultron are proof that despite existing in movies that have very different tones and styles, the characters can be brought together successfully to create something that's a lot of fun to watch.

Airtel Unveils Unlimited Free Calling Schemes

Airtel Unveils Unlimited Free Calling Schemes

airtel-cleaning-635.jpgn a bid to boost its landline business, country's largest telecom operator Bharti Airtel will be launching unlimited voice calling schemes for its broadband customers.

The company will come out with two plans offering unlimited free local calls for Rs. 49 per month and unlimited free local and STD calls for Rs. 99 per month.
The company has about 1.49 million broadband customers at the end of December last year.
"In an industry first, it will announce that its broadband customers can enjoy free voice calls to any network in the country 24x7," the company said.
State-run BSNL has also announced free voice calling from fixed line phones during night hours starting from May 1.
"Customers can enjoy unlimited free local calls with the pack priced at Rs. 49 per month and unlimited free STD+local calls at Rs. 99 per month to any network, anywhere in the country to both landlines and mobile phones round the clock," the company said.
A fair usage policy (FUP) is applicable on the unlimited free calling schemes, with the company specifying a limit of 5,000 minutes of free calls. Airtel also adds consumers availing of the schemes will require active broadband plans, and that the schemes aren't available for commercial use.
airtel_broadband_voice_packs.jpgAirtel currently provides fixed-line telephone and broadband services for homes as well as offices in 87 cities across the country.
According to the latest Trai data, BSNL, which dominates the landline space, was the biggest loser of fixed-line customers in February whereas Airtel emerged as the top gainer.
BSNL had over 16.6 million landlines at the end of February whereas Airtel had 3.39 million.

Inexpensive 3D Camera Developed That Works Outdoors

Inexpensive 3D Camera Developed That Works Outdoors

motion_contrast_3d_camera_second_gen_comp_photo_lab_nw_university.jpg

Researchers, including one of Indian-origin, have developed a 3D camera that is inexpensive, produces high-quality images, and works in all environments -- including outdoors.
"When Microsoft released its 3D camera Kinect in 2010, it transformed the video game industry," said Mohit Gupta, study co-author from the Columbia University.
The most inexpensive 3D camera to date, the Kinect bypassed the need for joysticks and controllers by sensing the user's gestures, leading to a feeling of total immersion into the game.
But users quickly discovered the Kinect's limitations. It does not work outdoors and it produces relatively low-quality images, the study said.
"In order for a 3D camera to be useful, it has to be something you can use in everyday, normal environments," said Oliver Cossairt, assistant professor of electrical engineering and computer science at the Northwestern University.
(Also See:4D Printing to Create 3D-Printed Objects That Can Transform Themselves)
"Outdoors is a part of that, and that is something the Kinect cannot do, but our Motion Contrast 3-D scanner can," Cossairt noted.
The project is supported by the Office of Naval Research and the US Department of Energy.
The new camera has many applications for devices in science and industry that rely on capturing the 3-D shapes of scenes "in the wild," such as in robotics, bioinformatics, augmented reality, and manufacturing automation.
It could potentially also be used for navigation purposes, install on anything from a car to a motorised wheelchair, study pointed out.
The findings were presented at the IEEE International Conference on Computational Photography in Houston.

Best Time to Launch, Promote Apps Is the Weekend: Study

Best Time to Launch, Promote Apps Is the Weekend: Study

 samsung_galaxy_s6_edge_reuters_3.jpg

The best time for mobile app developers to launch a new app is weekend, says a study.
The weekend may be the better time to run an ad campaign that promotes purchases, the report also found.
The study was conducted by San Francisco-based mobile app optimisation startup Sensor Tower, which offers an app analytics service that helps developers better understand how to improve their apps' keywords in order to increase their app's visibility in app store searches.
The company said it regularly fielded questions from its customers about the timing of new app releases, which actually vary a bit from category to category, and wanted to offer a more comprehensive answer to these questions.
The firm broke down downloads and revenue estimates by day for all iOS apps in the US in order to see what percentage of the weekly total took place each day, indicating the best time to launch or run a campaign.
The data is more relevant to those looking to promote their new applications by running campaigns to attract new users or purchases - something that generally occurs alongside an app's launch, too.
The company found that the best day to run promos vary across the app store's different categories.
While weekends are often best as a rule of thumb, it seems, there can be some variance when it comes to when to promote purchases versus downloads.
For example, business apps do better on weekdays as that's when most people are in the office or are focused on working.
Similarly, weekdays were better to promote medical apps purchases.
The findings were based on a three-month study of app revenue and estimated weekly downloads for iOS applications that run January through March of this year.

Game Development in India: In a State of Constant Flux

Game Development in India: In a State of Constant Fluxjames_chris_manish_agarwal_pocket_gamer_connects_bangalore.jpg
As we waded through throngs of Indian video game developers at Pocket Gamer Connects (PGC) Bangalore earlier this month, we played a ton of games on the show floor. And most of them were surprisingly good.
Pocket Gamer Connects is a conference for mobile game developers by Pocket Gamer, one of leading websites on mobile games. It partnered with Reliance to bring this highly sought after event to India for the first time. We travelled to Bangalore to check out the latest developments in the Indian games industry.
Indian video game developers are usually known for two things. One is their prowess at tasks like artwork for AAA games. It's a skill that's built big companies including Dhruva, Technicolor, and Lakshya. And the other, less flattering claim to fame, is their tendency to clone well-known games. By now though, things are different.
On the show floor of PGC, we saw a lot of familiar mobile games such as Socioball, made by Yellow Monkey Studios, but there was also a wealth of new games as well. June Software showed the super-polished, gorgeous MaskGun, a twitchy first-person shooter with accessible controls. Another great game was Unwynd, a cerebral puzzler from Dropout Games, a studio formed by design school dropouts.
Local talent has improved by leaps and bounds, and at The Very Big Indie Pitch - a chance to win Rs. 10 lakhs and a publishing deal with Reliance Games - the judges echoed this sentiment.
"The standard is insane," said Alysia Judge, News Editor Pocket Gamer and one of the judges for The Very Big Indie Pitch. "The judges were saying earlier that if this had been GDC [Game Developers Conference] some of the games that did not make the top five [at PGC] would have easily made the top three [at GDC] this time, they were astounding."
(Also see: What Is GDC and What to Expect at the Game Developers Conference 2015)
High quality, but limited money in India
The quality of games made in India has finally hit a global standard, but local developers aren't too happy. Barring a privileged few, the majority of Indian studios are bootstrapped startups. Funding for further development is a point of concern, as venture capitalists focus on business plans that show how the studios will make money from Indian users.
octro_cover.jpg"Today most VCs want an India strategy. Casino games are getting the most attention from VCs at the moment," says Anuj Tandon co-founder of Rolocule Games. "An entrepreneur can either try their luck with creating games in other genres for India or target global markets because Clash of Clans has more revenues than Indian casino games."
To make a game on the scale of Clash of Clans requires tremendous skill, expertise, and time. It makes the little sense to most when the success of studios like Octro and Moon Frog show that gambling games are the way to make money from Indian audiences. If you're trying to make a creative game that could earn global recognition, then things are getting harder, thanks to the investor demand for an India focus. Only gambling games can claim such a figures, but that is something investors are blind to.
(Also see: Indian Developers Aren't Being Creative Enough Yet: Microsoft's Joseph Landes)
A well placed industry veteran tells us that the top grossing games from these Octro and Moon Frog end up trading positions on the chart ever so often, each making around $1,80,000 (over Rs. 1.08 crore) a month. That's a small number compared to what SuperCell earns on Clash of Clans, or GungHo with Puzzles & Dragons, but given the install base for Android in this country, the potential for such companies is immense.
It's something studios like MechMocha are aware of. After its debut effort PuppetPunch, the company is now focusing squarely on India.
puppet_punch_india.jpg"Our next venture would roll out for the local market since we know about it," says Arpita Kapoor, co-founder of MechMocha. The studio faced difficulties in meeting deadlines while trying to update PupperPunch for Easter, and these issues are why she would rather focus on India. Otherwise, the studio would have to localise its offering for each region, for instance re-skinning the game to match the tastes of the Chinese audience during the Moon Festival.
App stores break geographical boundaries, games should too
However this renewed focus on India by investors it's not something all local developers are ready for. Most of them target global audiences and for one simple reason - monetisation is a lot better. For example, Udipi-based 99Games' Star Chef did fantastically well all over the world. Shilpa Bhat, senior producer at Robosoft, the parent company of 99games, told us that the same version of the game is playable in the UK and the US.
"We have a few ideas on how we'd want to launch the game for India," said Bhat. "Right now our attempts are from a global perspective. When we bring it to India, we will need India-specific content and an Android version as well."
But there's no immediate plans for India just yet. Rohith Bhat, the founder of Robosoft recently raised funding of $12 million to aid in expansion efforts. He told us that the focus for the company will be "global in the short term, and India in the long term."
This is because although India is consistently ranked higher in terms of downloads on the Google Play Store, eking money out of customers is challenging. It's something Google is all too aware of. But relying on Google, Apple, and Microsoft to fix things isn't a solution.
app_store_ios_apple.jpgAccording to industry experts like Oscar Clark, depending on platform holders to aid efforts isn't the best way forward.
"It's about the nature of the companies themselves. And their driving factors are not primarily around game development. To be honest it shouldn't be," he says. "However there is a problem. I do think there's something about discovery that really needs to fundamentally shift. As long as the current structure exists, which is basically focussed around the arbitrary decisions, it highlights a classic problem of not understanding how retail works."
A well-networked future?
And this is where events like Pocket Gamer Connects and The Very Big Indie Pitch comes in. It allows local talent to hobnob with those in a position to take game development further such as Reliance Games. Even then, the results are tenuous at best.
"I ended up declining an offer from Reliance to publish my game," said one developer on the condition of anonymity. "They have as much of a chance at getting my game featured [on app stores] as I would if I published myself and they would not commit to user acquisition spends for it either. There's no point if the deal isn't more lucrative."
Even Himanshu Manwani of Xigma Games, the winner of The Very Big Indie Pitch was non-committal about signing a publishing deal with Reliance, saying that he'd "look into the details" before inking the dotted line.
"I still haven't decided yet. I'm planning to go to Pune. Once I go there, I'll talk to them and decide after that," revealed Manwani .
Winner_of_Pocket_Gamer_Connects_Himanshu_Manwani.jpgIt's interesting to see this in contrast to Reliance's take on PGC, and partnering with developers. In an earlier interview, Manish Agarwal, Reliance Games' CEO seemed rather open to flexible deals.
"We are not in a vegetable market to negotiate. It is in my interest that developers make more money and they talk about it. 50-50 to me is the baseline," he says. "Now let's say the game is completely finished and it is fantastic, I can even go higher [than 50 percent share to the developers]. I absolutely believe that after taking out my cost of marketing and the support of people which I am giving, if I can really make money I'm happy. And if the developer gets money he will make a second one, third one. Because any publishing history if you see, it becomes big with three or four developers not with 200 of them."
All of this makes for a fascinating passage of play for Indian developers. While the industry has seen its fair share of acquisitions and funding over the years, it appears to be in a constant state of flux. One thing for sure though, the quality is good enough for international standards, allowing them a greater amount of leverage in terms of negotiations or to simply walk away from a deal.

OpManager is a powerful network management system that includes several features for efficient network monitoring, alarm notification, health reporting, and more. The software is quite easy to install and configure.
Its browser based management interface makes network management extremely simple. It allows admin to set up a large number of devices and set specific templates and parameters that can be monitored on each device. Administrators can set-up automated routine maintenance, as well as troubleshooting tasks that are performed when a network fault occurs.
Dashboard: It is quite easy to add devices to be monitored and discover new networks as well. The interface provides an overview of the available devices, MS Exchange Services, Processes, Services, by both availability and downtime. The network, VoIP, WAN RTT and CCTV view are also available with OpManager. It uses a standard SNMP as a monitoring method, but it can also use WMI to monitor Windows servers and Active Directory. In addition, it can use SSH/Telnet to monitor statistics for Linux servers.
Network and Device Monitoring: It allows admin to monitor all connected devices across the network using SNMP and WMI monitoring method. It offers real-time network uptime monitoring, thereby ensuring that network devices, services are up and running. OpManager provides numerous availability monitoring options including device, interface, WAN link using Cisco IP SLA, service, Windows, website, process and device availability monitoring.

OpManager collects Flows using Cisco’s NetFlow and after analyzing the bandwidth usage, it generates reports to trace bandwidth usage patterns.
You can also monitor scripts if you use a number of scripts to retrieve data and perform tasks on your servers. The admin can locate the device connected in the network with the help of ‘Google Maps’.
Network Fault Management: The powerful fault management capability detects, recovers and limits the impact of the faults in your network and allows you to resolve a fault instantly. It also monitors VMware and provides IT administrators a single fault and performance management console for the entire server infrastructure – both physical and virtual. Apart from this, it also monitors Hyper-V, Citrix XenServer, PC/system, service, Windows, process-monitoring and files/folders.
IT Workflow Automation: The ‘IT Workflow Automation’ feature allows admin to configure automated routine maintenance as well as troubleshooting tasks that are performed when a network fault occurs. Admin can test devices instantly, test WMI credential, etc.
Active Alarms: It tracks the devices and networks and if there is no response after two consecutive pings, then the OpManager considers the device as unavailable. You can assign the number of pings and their time interval. If the device remains unresponsive, it generates an alarm (email, SMS text, run scripts, etc.). It works well for configuring and monitoring devices, though there is a little issue with the alert feature.
Reporting: OpManager has a fantastic reporting engine that can generate different types of reports.  The reporting module is fully-featured and easy to use. It allows you to create custom report views as well as filtered report views based on ‘business views’.
